Report

The Electrical Division has been organising overseas technical visit each year to enable our members to keep abreast with the latest development in electrical engineering and energy utilization/environmental sustainability overseas.  This year, we visited Germany from 21 July to 1 August with 41 participants.

The delegation visited Siemens Switchgear Factory Frankfurt (SWF) which manufactures secondary distribution switchgear up to 24kV and primary distribution switchgear up to 40.5kV. During the visit, SWF team demonstrated the state-of-the-art development tools and highly automated production equipment. The SWF team also introduced the innovation technology on 1) Non-conventional current and voltage transformer according to IEC61869, 2) Blue GIS, and 3) Digitalization and IoT (Internet of Things) connectivity for the medium voltage switchgear to improve condition diagnosis, spacing required and ease of installation.

The delegation also visited the Siemens MindSphere Application Centers (MAC) in Nuremberg. MindSphere, a cloud-based IoT operating system, offers a full suite of products and services for digital transformation. The customer can connect their devices to the platform and develop its own Application. A seamless integration between the Demand Response and Building Management System by data sharing via Common Information Model was demonstrated to show how the energy and maintenance efficiency could be improved.

The delegation then visited the Schneider factory in Regensburg. This factory manufactures GIS up to 40.5kV for GHA and 24kV for GMA types. Manufacturing processes with highlights on quality control, and testing and commissioning were demonstrated.  EcoStuxure platform on Connected Devices, Edge Control and Apps, Analytics and Services concept was also introduced to show how the IoT and Big Data could be handled efficiently in today’s open protocol environment.

The delegation also visited TE Connectivity factory in Ottobrunn, close to Munich. This factory manufactures HV, MV and LV cable accessories particularly heat shrink and cold applied products. Laboratory for partial discharge test and DC high voltage test was visited. The delegation was also pleased to see the production line of heat shrink cable sleeves.

Through discussion and exchange, the delegation had a better understanding of the development of electrical engineering in Germany.
