Report

By Mr. Keith Wong

With the aim to nurture a new generation of power engineering talent, IVE Engineering of Vocational Training Council (VTC), which is the largest vocational and professional education and training provider in Hong Kong, established the high-specification facility – CLP Power Engineering Laboratory, with contribution from CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, in April 2021. Featuring a High Voltage Training Centre and the Smart Grid Operation Centre, the lab is equipped with advanced equipment to cater for the development of new technologies in power engineering, such as Smart Grid, Internet-of-things (IoT), energy efficient smart devices. On 17 Dec 2021, the HKIE Electrical Division organized a technical visit to Waterfront Annex of IVE (Haking Wong) to broaden the understanding.

In the beginning, Dr. T.S. Lam, Head of Engineering Department delivered the introductory speech and objectives for setting up of the Power Engineering Laboratory, providing the most up-to-date industry technologies and hands-on practical training for future pillars. The visitors had a chance to visit High Voltage Training Centre, which is a training site equipped with different type of 11kV equipment and Supervisory Control and Acquisition Data Center (SCADA), and also the Smart Grid Operation Centre, which is one of the first few institutional innovative training facilities equipped with advanced Real-time digital simulators (RTDS), electric vehicle charging station and energy storage facilities etc. The visit was finally end with the demonstration and practical training of underground power cable detection, based on frequency detection techniques.

Through this visit, members gained knowledge about the development of VTC and also how future power industry talents to be nurtured by the advanced technologies and professional trainings to support the sustainability future of Hong Kong. On behalf of the EL Division, we would like to express our gratefulness to Dr. T.S. Lam and VTC’s staffs for arranging and supporting the visit.
