The Professional Short Course 2023 consisting of four classes with the theme of “Smarter Design for our Electrified Living” was held by the Electrical Division successfully in March 2023. Experienced engineers and industry practitioners from a government department, utility companies and academics were invited to give members updated and practical knowledge on different aspects of electrical systems which are under active development and exploration in Hong Kong. In addition to classroom lectures, parallel online classes had also been arranged.
For Class 1, Ir Steve CHAN, Senior Engineer, Ir Grace YIP, Electronics Engineer and Ms. Tracy CHEUNG, Senior Technical Officer from Electrical and Mechanical Services Department were invited as co-speakers on the topic “Briefing of BIM-AM Standards & Guidelines v3.0 and the New Guidelines for the Handover of E&M Installation to EMSD”. In the class, the latest BIM-AM Standards and Guidelines v3.0 were introduced. In addition, the new Guidelines for the Handover of E&M Installation to EMSD published in 2022 were presented. The Standards and Guidelines aim at providing BIM modelling standard, coding standard and requirements on information for handover of BIM projects and conforming to EMSD BIM-AM system.
For Class 2, we invited Ir C.L. CHAN, Protection Engineer from The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd as the speaker for the topic “Protection Systems for Distribution Network & General Requirements on Customer HV/LV Main Switch Protection Scheme”. The design philosophy of protection systems and the typical protection arrangements in the power distribution network were shared. Besides, the approved and failed examples were briefed so that participants could be able to practise the protection design through practical applications.
Both classes of the Course were well received by our members with over 150 participants in total. These classes together with the online quiz, as well as the interactive question-and-answer session, were particularly welcomed by the participants. Professional Short Course 2023 – Classes 3 and 4 will be reported in the next issue of this Journal.
