Local Technical Visit to Green Mobility Innovations (GMI) High-Power Charge (HPC) Pantograph Solution for electric Public Light buses (ePLB)

By Mr. Keith Wong

The rising of Electric Vehicles (EVs) demands the support from Smart Infrastructure and technology implementation. The invention of High-Power Charging solution – Opportunity Charging Pantograph are set out to provide an effective option for adoption of e-PLBs taking into account the daily operational requirements. The HKIE Electrical Division organized a technical visit to Green Mobility Innovations Ltd (GMI) who is the local technology company and the only Registered Electric Vehicle System Integrator and Manufacturer in Hong Kong, on 27 August 2021.

During the visit, the GMI's Managing Director, Dr. C.P. Lo shared the development of commercial Electric Vehicles, including the e-Motors, e-Taxis, ePLB as well as the e-Buses. He introduced the battery and charging technology improvement in recent years, explained the latest lithium titanate could offer over 20,000 charging cycles. Throughout the Series Hybrid operation, the battery can be topped up within optimal range from 30% to 80% capacity, which further improve the charging up to 100,000 cycles. The batteries could charge up to 10x of the nominal current, provided a solid base of high-power charging.

It was noted that the HKSAR adopted the HPC standard recognized by SAE international, enable the openness and compatibility of EVs and charging facilities providers. After the presentation, the participates had the chance to look into the operation of Pantograph and also the assembly of electric Public Light Buses.

Through this visit, members gained an in-depth understanding about the electric Public Light buses (ePLB) and the principle of High-Power Charge (HPC) Pantograph Solution. On behalf of the EL Division, we would like to express our gratefulness to Dr. C.P. Lo and GMI for arranging and supporting the visit.
