By Mr. Keith Wong

Hong Kong is being developed into a Smart City whilst the engineering and construction industry are playing the important roles for the changes. The HKIE Electrical Division organized a technical visit to Construction Exhibition Hub operated by The Construction Industry Council (CIC) on 27 September 2021 to the facilitate understanding of technology implementation.

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) which was formed on 1 February 2007, aims to drive for unity and excellence of the construction industry of Hong Kong, are to forge consensus on long-term strategic issues and convey the industry’s needs and aspirations to Government. There are four exhibitions to demonstrates the local showcases and oversea innovative solutions and technologies to drive the industry transformation and strengthen the sustainability of the construction industry in Hong Kong.

“CITAC Guided Tour” demonstrated the adoption of advanced technology in construction, the showcases included the Smart Helmet and Mix Reality for design and training, also the Digital Twin for life cycle management. The “Zero Carbon Park”, which is the first zero carbon building in Hong Kong, introduced the Air Improvement Phototactic (AIPV) System which able to generate renewable energy through sunlight though Cadmium Telluride nano thin-film and the groundbreaking quantum dot nano top coating decomposes PM2.5 and volatile organic compounds. There were also the local and oversea showcases of innovation construction method and 1:1 MiC connection and sub-component exhibition in “MiC Resources Centre”. The “BIM Space” illustrated the implementation of Building Information Model. The common data model enables the improvement in design construction processes and asset management. The visit was end with the showcase of Hologram Table which generated the 3D view of a city for better planning.

Through this visit, members gained an understanding about the state-of-the-art technology not only improves the operation safety and efficiency, and also acts as the core of boosting the Smart City development.
