Report

Technical Webinar on Global Wind Energy Development Outlook

The Paris Agreement was adopted at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference and it aims to limit global warming to well below 2˚C, preferably to 1.5˚C, compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this long-term temperature goal, countries aim to reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate neutral world by mid-century, which renewable energy could play an important role towards the success. According to International Energy Agency (IEA), global wind capacity additions increased more than 90% in 2020, and is expected to grow in the future.

The Electrical Division organised the webinar on Global Wind Energy Development Outlook on 24 May 2022 to talk about the technical aspect and the global commercial trends on wind power. There were over 500 participants who attended the webinar. The webinar was shared by Mr. CC Ngan from CLP.

Mr. Ngan was a Senior Manager in Renewable Energy of Group Operations, CLP Holdings, before his retirement. He was responsible for energy yield assessment for solar and wind projects. In the webinar, Mr. Ngan briefed the participants on the latest development of wind energy in Hong Kong and elaborated in depth about the major components in wind turbines commonly used in the industry. He also shared with the participants the pros and cons about Direct Drive and Non-direct Drive types wind turbines. Through the wide adoption of these renewable power generations, it can significantly reduce the carbon footprints and achieve a sustainable environment.

The session wrapped up with a question-and-answer session. The participants interacted with the speaker and raised various questions on technical aspects of wind power as well as the future insight of renewable power generation. Our members enjoyed the seminar and gained knowledge on the topic. At the end of the webinar, Ir Joseph Leung, on behalf of the Electrical Division, expressed appreciation to Mr. Ngan for his presentation that had made the webinar such a success.
