Programme Highlight:

To power the railway services in urban lines, MTR has its own distribution network with power intakes supplied by the two power companies at high voltage level.  The total power output is close to 250 MegaWatt which is equivalent to the power sufficient to supply almost 200,000 people for their living in Hong Kong.  The existing high voltage power equipment and the low voltage systems up to the switchboard level have been put into services by different construction phases since 1979, including the earliest sections in Kwun Tong Line, Tsuen Wan Line and Island Line.  After decades of non-stop services, the earliest power supply systems are being replaced under an asset replacement project.   Riding on the replacement opportunity, the power system capacity, overall system reliability, maintainability and overall energy efficiencies will be improved by the application of various new technologies.   The Seminar will introduce the development of the design and the replacement strategy to foster the new generation of the power supply systems for another decades of MTR railway services.

Speakers:

i)  Ir Raymond Tam

Raymond is the Chief Construction Manager (Power System) of the Capital Works Business Unit in MTR Corporation Limited. Raymond has over 25 years’ experience in railway extension and major asset replacement projects. He is now taking the project management role of the HV/LV replacement projects being undertaken in the Operating Railway.

ii) Ir Anson Chan

Anson is currently the Lead Design Manager of MTR Corporation Limited looking after the design of the new power system under the asset replacement project.  He has been working in MTR over 30 years rendering engineering design and technical support services to different operation engineering departments aiming at the continuous improvements on the safety, reliability; efficiency and effectiveness of the electrical systems for the railways.

Technical Webinar on The New Generation of MTR Power Systems for Urban Railways

By Kelvin Li

The technical seminar on “The New Generation of MTR Power Systems for Urban Railways” organized by the Electrical Division was successfully held on 19 July 2022 through online streaming. The webinar attracted over 700 members from various disciplines to attend. The Electrical Division was glad to invite Ir Raymond Tam and Ir Anson Chan from MTRC to talk about the power system of MTR.

To power the railway services in urban lines, MTR has its own distribution network with power intakes supplied by the two power companies at high voltage level. The total power output is close to 250MW and the existing high voltage power equipment and the low voltage systems up to the switchboard level have been put into services by different construction phases since 1979. After decades of non-stop services, the earliest power supply systems are being replaced under an asset replacement project. Riding on the replacement opportunity, the power system capacity, overall system reliability, maintainability and overall energy efficiencies will be improved by the application of various new technologies.

Ir Raymond Tam, who is the Chief Construction Manager (Power System) of the Capital Works Business Unit in MTRC, introduced the enhancement works undergoing by MTRC including upgrading the cable capacity, replacement of power transformers and rationalization of cable network. Through the upgradation of power system, it can significantly enhance the railway system reliability, maintainability as well as the energy efficiency.

The second part was shared by Ir Anson Chan, who is the Lead Design Manager of MTRC. Ir Chan shared with our members about the challenges and planning in project implementation. He illustrated with various examples of challenges encountered during the replacement project and demonstrated how the adoption of innovative technologies such as 3D scanning benefit the planning and sequencing of works.

The session wrapped up with a question-and-answer session. The participants and speakers had a fruitful discussion on the electrical system and innovative power design of railway system. Last but not least, Ir YH Leung, Chairman of Electrical Division, expressed appreciation to Ir Tam and Ir Chan for their wonderful presentation that had made the webinar a huge success.
