Programme Highlight:
The technology powering the electric vehicle charging industry has changed greatly over the last few years. As electric vehicles become an essential part of the transportation ecosystem, it is particularly challenging to keep up with new developments and ensure that technologies comply with the latest regulations and standards. This webinar shall go through the development of standards and discuss the latest technology regarding the EV Charging.

Mr. Jonathan Law-Chin Ngai
Jonathan Law is the Senior Product Engineer of Hong Kong EV Power Limited since September 2015. Jonathan has over 7 years of extensive experience in product R&D. After joining EV Power, he has been responsible for developing the smart electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment as well as system integration, product quality control etc. Under his management and effort, he successfully delivered several product rollouts and assisted the team to complete numerous large scale project regarding EV Charger deployment in Hong Kong. Jonathan graduated from The City University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Electronic & Communication Engineering (Honors) in 2012.

ReportTechnical seminar on Evolution of EV Charging Standard

With the development of battery technology and the Government policy towards carbon neutrality, electric vehicles (EV) are getting popular over the last decade. EV charging is an indispensable part of EV. The EV charging standards and regulations are evolving to keep up with the latest technology development.
Electrical Division organized the captioned seminar on 31 Jan 2023 for the speaker to narrate the evolution of EV charging standards. Over 480 participants joined the seminar presented by Mr Jonathan Ngai from Hong Kong EV Power Limited.
Mr Ngai has extensive experience on EV charger development and system integration in Hong Kong. He first explained the evolution of charging modes under IEC61851. The charging current, voltage and communication are changing over the decades. The standards governing charging point and charging connector were illustrated. He then described the details of communication on vehicle charging state. Mr Ngai highlighted the requirements on power supply protection, such as harmonics and DC leakage current, and how they affect the choice of RCD. Before the end of his presentation, Mr Ngai portrayed the future development of EV charging, such as wireless charging and reverse power transfer.
The seminar wrapped up with a question-and-answer session. Participants actively raised questions on technical aspects of EV charging design and operation. On behalf of Electrical Division, we would like to express our gratitude towards the speaker for his sharing.
