Programme Highlight:

CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 was written into China 5 years road maps. Reduction of operation carbon of existing buildings is one of key steps towards zero-carbon-ready goal. According to the "Hong Kong Energy End-Use Data 2021" report by EMSD, for electricity used for lighting in commercial buildings, the energy saving can be achieved by changing lamp source and optimization on lighting control. This seminar introduces various strategies on smart retrofit lighting solution including leveraging the popularity of standard LED tubes and lamps by introducing IoT processor and antenna. Case study and others useful recourses on lighting design will be shared as well.

Speakers:

Mr. Mr. Cole Siu

Mr Cole Siu is the Head of Lighting Application Specialist in Signify Hong Kong. Signify is the leading lighting company in the world who focus on IoT innovations and sustainable lighting. Cole has more than 17 years of lighting application experience. He participated in large lighting infrastructure projects including LED Public Lighting Replacement for roads and tunnels and Kai Tat Development, as well as various commercial lighting projects for smart offices. Currently, Cole is one of the Board of Administration of CIE Hong Kong.

Report

Sustainable Lighting and Control Solution for Achieving Carbon Neutrality

With the global trend towards carbon neutrality, energy saving is a hot topic. Lighting consumes a substantial amount of electrical energy in Hong Kong. Energy saving on lighting can be achieved with the introduction of efficient luminaire and lighting control.

Electrical Division organized the captioned seminar on 7 Mar 2023 for the speaker to narrate sustainable lighting and control. Over 400 participants joined the seminar online, presented by Mr Cole Siu from Signify Hong Kong.

Mr Siu has over 17 years of experience in lighting applications. During the seminar, he first explained the national policy of China on carbon neutrality before 2060, and Hong Kong Carbon Neutral 2050 target. He reviewed the energy consumption statistics in Hong Kong. Lighting is accountable for about 20% of office electricity usage in 2020. The use of LED raised from 1% to 27% in quantity in the past 10 years. He highlighted the carbon neutrality reporting guide and standards of various multi-national organizations, as a part of environmental, social and governance policy.

Mr Siu gave an account on the positive impacts of retrofitting fluorescent tube with LED in terms of energy saving and hazardous substance reduction. The technical details and safety concerns of replacement of fluorescent tubes with double-capped LED lamps were explained. He then pinpointed the big difference between LED tubes in efficiencies and lifetimes.

Mr Siu subsequently explained the importance of lighting control. Besides automation and ease of use, data collection for energy reporting and maintenance is an attractive feature. Typical architecture of control wiring with DALI and RS485 network was illustrated. It integrates light fittings, motion sensors and control panels into a communication network with control and monitoring. DALI is evolving to incorporate Internet of Things (IoT) and mesh network. It permits fast and low-cost integration with great flexibility on physical connection. In closing, Mr Siu projected the future trend of lighting. 3D printed luminaires and BIM Integration are foreseeable tendencies in the lighting industry.

The seminar wrapped up with a question-and-answer session. Participants actively raised questions on sustainable lighting and control system. The Electrical Division would like to express the gratitude towards the speaker for his sharing.
