Event Report - HKIE Electrical Division 2021 Electrical Model Design Competition

The 10th Electrical Model Design Contest organized by Electrical Division was successfully held on 9 May 2021. The aims of the Contest were to promote awareness of energy saving and understanding of renewable energy and electrical engineering for the lower forms of secondary students. It was an activity jointly organized with Education Bureau and Zero Carbon Building (ZCP) of Construction Industry Council (CIC), with generous support from The Hongkong Electric Co.,Ltd. (HK Electric) and CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd. (CLP).


There were in total 17 secondary schools participated in this yearly contest. The honorary judges invited included Ir Arthur Lee, representative of EMSD; Ir W.S. Tam, Chairman of the Electrical Division; Mr. Paul Chong, Chairman of Zero Carbon Building; and Mr Chan Chi-chung, the representative from Education Bureau.


The judging standards of the Contest included the energy output and workmanship of the solar model car, creativity, presentation skills and teamwork. Besides the championship, first and second runner-ups, there were also other awards such as the “Best Creativity Award”, the “Best Team Work Award” etc. for the Contest. The participating teams were also encouraged to record short movies representing their teams and publish it in YouTube. The movie with the highest score of “Like” won the “Best Micro-movie Award”.


This year, the competition was broadcasted online. Buddhist Sin Tak College won the champion as well as “The Highest Energy Output Award”; Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Mrs. Fung Wong Fung Ting Secondary School the first runner-up and Semple Memorial Secondary School the second runner-up. In addition, CNEC Christian College, Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School and Po Leung Kuk Wu Chung College got the merit awards. 


Many students reflected that the competition not only enriched their knowledge in renewable energy through the design and building their model cars but also improved their presentation skills and team spirit.
