Highlights:

The continuing development of Hong Kong’s economy requires a steady supply of talents in different sectors. With the major infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and the opportunities driven by the Belt and Road Initiative and Greater Bay Area development as well as the Net Zero Carbon commitment, we should seize these opportunities in innovation and technology development and applications, to facilitate the training and exchanges of E&M talents in the region, and to promote collaborations among the academia, the E&M sector, the public sector and the Government.

This seminar will start with the landscape of the current E&M talent development in Hong Kong, leading to the latest development of closer collaboration between the industry and academic institutions for various academic programmes, and the latest initiative of a Part-time Dual Master’s Degree Programme between Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Strathclyde and CLP Power Academy in the areas related to future energy and smart operation and management in power system, which aims to develop talents capable of applying various latest technologies such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, IoT etc. in different areas of the energy industry for meeting future challenges. Success stories will be shared at the seminar.

The objective of the seminar is to provide more information to E&M and energy industry practitioners on various programmes particularly the Dual Master’s Degree Programme that are currently available for their own developments as future leaders in the industry, for the benefits of both the individuals and the industry and the community at large.

Report

By Ir Dr KF Wong

Shortage of talents is a major concern for Hong Kong, let alone the power industry. For the continuing development of Hong Kong, steady supply of talents is vital. Thus, education plays an important role in nurturing future talents.

Electrical Division organized the captioned seminar on 15 Mar 2023 for the speaker to narrate how graduates can advance in career by further study. Over 200 participants joined the online seminar which was delivered by Ir Prof. Paul Poon from CLP Power Academy, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited.

Ir Prof. Poon has over 40 years of experience in power industry and education. In the seminar, he first explained the high reliability electricity network in Hong Kong with large installed capacity. Then, he listed out the recent infrastructure development and technology advancement, such as waste treatment facility, net carbon zero project, AI and smart city, even more projects in the upcoming decade, that will drive high demand for electrical and mechanical (E&M) professionals.

Ir Prof. Poon illustrated the continuous career development of talents, using CLP Power as a case study. Talents are offered the opportunity to climb up the career ladder from a technician to a professional engineer then an engineering director. This would, of course, expect the talent to acquire appropriate academic qualification which could be from a diploma to a bachelor degree and then a master degree. To be a future leader, the attributes of people leadership, business leadership and self-leadership are indispensable, as such studying of a suitable master degree is an effective way of developing these attributes.

He continued with an example of a dual master programme designed to suit the need for future energy and power system smart operation and management. Study for future talents needs to pay attention to emerging technologies including new developments in power system, AI, big data, IoT and renewable energy integrations. A graduate and current student echoed the same by sharing their views and learning experience from their further studies.

The seminar wrapped up with a question-and-answer session. The Electrical Division would like to express the gratitude towards the speaker for his sharing.
